My whole life I’ve had a fascination with Switzerland. As a family we have hiked here year after year, after year. The experience is so calming, we just pick a mountain trail and soon feel as if we are all alone in the world…and so small. We spot birds, mostly finches, migrating over the mountain ridge toward the Mediterranean.

Birds aren’t the only ones migrating; we see hundreds of red admiral butterflies. They seem to fly effortlessly…as we struggle on. But the panoramic view of the valley below makes it worthwhile. Even though it’s late in the season for most flowers, we find a few still blooming. How beautiful it must have been in July! High in the mountains, fall is progressing at a faster pace than in the valley.
