It is a tradition this time of year: take a little time every day to see if the morel mushrooms have come up.  The trick is to predict when they will appear, it takes just the right combination of rain, warm days and ground cover.  Even if you don’t find any morels there are plenty of other things to see!

While hunting for the morels this afternoon I heard a Pileated woodpecker in the woods.  It is the largest woodpecker here in North America and it is sight to behold, growing to almost twenty inches long!  This is why I always take my binoculars with me, even if I’m just out looking for mushrooms…
