Artist Notes

Without making even the smallest movement the green heron stares into the pond. He has not spotted me; I’m nearby trying not to move while watching him. I see some frogs sunbathing along the edge of the pond, some small but also some very large bullfrogs. The heron makes a sudden move, and the next thing I see are frog legs sticking out from the side of his beak. Well…not so appetizing to me, but the heron seems delighted.

I have always thought of the hibiscus as a tropical plant. This rose-mallow (Hibiscus moscheutos) manages to survive bitter cold temperatures here, so I suppose it’s time I reconsider! The blooms are beautiful shades of pink and white, and some measure around seven inches across!
