Artist Notes
It’s Thanksgiving this week, a holiday we don’t have in the Netherlands. It is a tradition that dates back to the 17th century, when a group of immigrants from England celebrated their harvest. They invited their neighbors, a Native American tribe called the Wampanoags.
Abraham Lincoln decided in 1863 that Thanksgiving should be an official holiday, the last Thursday of November. Around that same time the first sparrows flew around in North America…they came over from Europe in 1851. Now I have more sparrows at my feeders here in Missouri than I do in the Netherlands.
In addition to turkey, another must-have for Thanksgiving dinner is pumpkin pie, made from those beautiful large pumpkins. Supermarkets have piles and piles of them.
