Summers in Missouri can be hot – very hot in fact, and humid as well. The prairie is at its most beautiful this time of year and while the lack of trees means shade is at a premium the triple digits, heat doesn’t stop me from heading outside. Oddly enough my husband Gaston refuses to come along.

The middle of the day is the perfect time to spot a dickcissel; these birds simply adore the sun! Lucky for me they are fairly straightforward to spot – they find an elevated spot to sit and loudly announce their presence by calling their own name. Now that I’ve seen and heard him I can probably go back inside where it’s nice and cool…
