When you look out over a Missouri prairie in the middle of summer it looks like a giant field of waving grasses with shimmering hot air above the horizon. It doesn’t look like much is happening at first glance. Walk through it, however, and you will discover an incredible wealth of herbs, flowers and grasses. The most important one is Big Bluestem, which roots very deeply so it isn’t bothered by the drought in the summer. Some spots remind me of a garden full of planted flowers in the Netherlands, hundreds of purple Gayfeathers and yellow and purple Rudbeckia’s, or coneflowers. Observe. Discover. Enjoy.
